How to Build a Water-Drinking Habit: 7 Practical Methods

1 September 2026 · 5 min

How many times have you told yourself "I need to drink more water"? Drinking water seems simple, but strangely it's one of the most neglected habits — because the feeling of thirst usually shows up late, and throughout the day it's easy to let other things take priority. The good news: with the right system, this is one of the easiest habits to build.

1. Make it the first thing you do

Turn drinking a glass of water within the first 10 minutes of waking up into a routine — before you brush your teeth or check your phone, for instance. The "I'll drink if I remember" approach almost never works; tying it to a fixed trigger is far more reliable.

2. Keep a visible water bottle

Always having a full bottle on your desk or in your bag makes it easy to drink without waiting for the feeling of thirst. Out of sight is out of mind — it's completely normal to forget all day if the bottle isn't right in front of you.

3. Attach it to existing routines instead of creating a new one

Adding water drinking to something you already do ("before every meeting," "before every meal," "every time I take a break") sticks far more easily than setting up a brand-new reminder from scratch.

4. Make the amount concrete

"Drink plenty of water" is a vague goal. Instead, set something concrete and countable, like "3 bottles" or "8 glasses" — it should be something you can actually track progress against.

5. Change the taste (if you need to)

If you struggle to drink plain water, adding lemon, cucumber, or mint can make a big difference. Once the habit is established, most people can go back to plain water — but removing the initial barrier matters early on.

6. Don't wait until you're thirsty

By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already mildly dehydrated. Drinking on a regular schedule (e.g., every 2 hours) is far more effective than the "I'll drink when I feel like it" approach.

7. See your progress

Seeing how many days in a row you've hit your goal becomes an extra source of motivation. On Surekly you can mark your water-drinking habit daily and track your chain, seeing at a glance how many days you've kept it going without a break.

Start today: mark day one with a glass of water, and the rest will come naturally over time.
